S&M Café
A good balance between caff and trendy diner, S&M (that’s sausage and mash) flies the flag for traditional British cuisine. It might have been surpassed in terms of meat-and-spud quality by the likes of Mother Mash , but it still draws a hugely diverse clientele: everyone from brickies to celebrities. Bangers and mash is the focus. You can ‘mix & mash’ from a selection of ten sausages (including pork, lamb, chicken, vegetarian and gluten-free varieties, plus daily specials), four types of mash, and three of gravy. Shepherd’s pie, steak and kidney pie, smoked haddock fish cakes, all-day breakfasts and a nostalgic range of puddings also appear; there’s a reasonable choice of wines and beers. This branch has preserved features of the original Alfredo’s café (featured in Quadrophenia); the shopfront is an art deco classic. Inside are Formica tables and chrome-trimmed fittings. Staff are friendly, music is eclectic, and ethical considerations are made (free-range pork, Fairtrade coffee).
