Barking, Essex
Graced with a pair of palm trees made of garish flashing lights, Saravana Bhavan is a bright, busy canteen that serves a mix of South Indian dishes and stir-fries to noisy families and couples of all ages. The central kitchen, separated from diners by glass, is enjoyably theatrical: watch as chefs ladle batter on to a huge hotplate, then peel off another enormous pancake. A masala dosa the width of our table and a barely smaller pair of adai (lentil pancakes) – each served with dips and a minimum of fuss on stainless steel trays – gave us a gutful of tasty vegetarian food for surprisingly little cash. There’s a jug of water on each table, but lassis and triveni are also served.

Yes. Saravana Bhavan is a traditional south Indian restaurant. I'm not sure where this sri-lankan cuisine came from. It is the best, by which I mean most authentic south indian vegetarian cuisine you can get. The chain is very popular in Tamil Nadu (India).
