  • Great food, great value. Come here if you enjoy going out to eat well. To the reviewer below: try All Bar One. I hear they also have an 'extensive wine list' and the food would better suit your palate.

  • DO NOT GO TO THE SILK ROAD! After hearing so many good things about this place, I was severely disappointed when I decided to eat here last night. Please avoid this place at all costs. Reasons: 1. The seating was overly cramped and canteen-style (pushed up against strangers). The atmosphere was very rushed and slap-dash. 2. All the food we ordered arrived sitting in a pool of grease (I know Chinese food can be greasy, but this was really taking the mick!). Barely finished our food and we were hungry afterwards. 3. There is hardly anything on the menu that isn't overly spicy and saturated in chilli oil or garlic (I love both chillies and garlic but this was overkill). The noodles were nothing to write home about. 5. The menu is VERY limited. Hardly any vegetarian options or non-spicy options. Wine list was a joke. Seriously disappointed. If you're south of the river and want good Chinese, I'd recommend the Hong Kong City Restaurant on New Cross Road (stone's throw away from the dive that is Silk Road). HKC has much more selection, is cleaner, less greasy and beautiful inside with an extensive wine list and excellent Dim Sum. If you're up for a Japanese there's also the New Fujiyama in Brixton which is SO much better than any sushi bar in Chinatown.

  • Jin Zao. The guotie are packet and were really not very good. Still, I'm sure they have frozen potstickers in Xinjiang too. The other ones (shuijiao) are made inhouse. I could've been clearer about that... You'll know of course that Silk Road is run by Han Chinese, not ethnic Xinjiang people.

  • They do not sell packet dumplings as the review below seems to think! For those of us who have actually visited Xinjiang province...you really can tell how authentic it is! This is some of the best authentic chinese food you will find in london.. if you wat the fancy standard chinese that you can get anywhere in Chinatown, by all means...If you want a taste of how real chinese eat, Silk Road is for you, amazing prices too!

  • A nice change from regular Chinese fare but totally overrated. Xinjiang options are nice to see but also quite limited really. The much vaunted lamb skewers are soggy and slimy. Much better in Chinatown's Empress of Sichuan to name just one option. Xinjiang noodles tasty but far too salty. Homestyle aubergine quite good but too oily and, as with everything here, plastered in chopped garlic (though that's how it is in China half the time). Fried dumplings (aka potstickers or guotie) were horrible. Packet ones dumped in a deep fryer and covered in old oil. Not authentic at all. The other dumplings I've had on previous occasions are way better. Service efficient but sullen. Toilets dreadful. This place was good about four years ago but has got so used to serving up 'big bowl chicken' to Guardian readers that they've really got lazy and standards are nothing like what they were. All that said, it can usually be relied on for a good value feed if you're short of options.
