Unlike most Turkish eateries in this neck of the woods, this basic canteen doesn’t specialise in grilled meat. Instead, diners get to choose from four or five meaty stews that tempt the passing foot traffic on Kingsland Road. A subtle culinary enterprise it certainly is not: with a few exceptions – such as the excellent stuffed pepper concoction that occasionally makes an appearance – most of the dishes qualify as dull-but-hearty refuelling food that’s far from ideal on a warm summer afternoon but fine for a chill winter’s night. The bread, which you’ll see being pounded into shape if you pass the place at 10am, isn’t that great, but the rice puddings are dangerously moreish.
