‘You don’t have a booking?’ No mate, it’s 8.30pm on a Monday night and this is remotest Highgate. We got the last table – go figure. All around were couples and pairs of couples sharing bottles of rosé and tucking happily into salads, pasta, and risotto, but mainly ordering from

the ten-strong list of pizzas. We enjoyed the speck pizza with smoked ham and the light tang of gorgonzola. The rossa (topped with spicy salami, roast peppers, caramelised onion and more) had a very hot kick thanks to more than a smatter of sliced raw chillies. Staff were pretty good, though not always on the ball – we weren’t told there was no chocolate fondant until after we’d ordered it. But we found desserts respectable, and the ice-cream excellent.
