Opened by the Patara chain in 2010 in St Martin’s Courtyard, Suda makes a perfect pit-stop for a quick lunch or dinner. The venue is set over two storeys and has a contemporary feel, with views on the first floor of the open kitchen. Regional Thai food is the speciality, so as well as the ubiquitous curries there are a few more unusual dishes. Highlights include various versions of that street-food classic, som tam, and spicy green papaya salad, here served with cherry tomatoes and nuts plus a choice of grilled meats; we tried the version with crisp-skinned barbecued chicken. The salad had a decent chilli kick by western standards, but could have done with a splash more fish sauce. Pork and crab crackers (essentially spring rolls) were also enjoyable, with well-seasoned meat and crisp pastry, while sizzling sea bass with red curry sauce was flecked with fragrant slivers of lime leaf. There are plenty of interesting drinks, including fruity smoothies, equally fruity cocktails and Thai beer. With lunchtime specials at £7.50 (for curry or pad thai with veg and rice-wrapper rolls), Suda can be very good value too.
