You might think that the limited natural light in this basement canteen would put people off. Far from it – Taro’s reputation for diminutive price tags and generous portions has made it popular with a wide spectrum of bargain-hunters. Clustering around chunky pine communal tables, diners order from a roll-call of traditional Japanese favourites, from sushi to noodles, plus teriyaki, katsu and tempura. It’s surprisingly roomy, meaning that at all but the busiest times, staff are happy to leave you to it, appearing only occasionally to offer more drinks, such as cold bottles of Kirin or Asahi.
