Tay Do’s vast dining room is often full, perhaps because this is the first available Vietnamese restaurant at the southern tip of Kingsland Road. The BYO policy undoubtedly helps too. Service is impersonal and brusque, but not unfriendly. The tome of a menu contains nearly 300 dishes (divided by ingredient: fish, poultry, vegetables, tofu…). It’s easy to order wrongly. Few of our dishes matched the menu’s promise; best was a starter of steamed pork-stuffed squid, which was generous with the well-seasoned, minced pork stuffing, and came with an excellent dipping sauce of lemon juice, salt and white pepper. Shredded pork skin and herb rolls included the appropriately rubbery skin, but was bland and seemed to lack the required freshness. Rarely found in London, southern-style hu tieu soup is here made with tapioca noodles; yet while the south of Vietnam may be known for its sweeter, cleaner flavours, this broth was unappetisingly sweet. Better was chargrilled goat on cold vermicelli, with a nice smoky aroma that compensated for the slightly overcooked meat. Dining here seems to be a hit and miss experience. While there’s great variety, we’d rather choose from a smaller menu of consistently good dishes.

Very good and with a different range of dishes to those of nearby restaurants including frogs legs. Recommended.
All four occasions that I've been to Tay Do the food has been absolutely awesome. Each time we ordered different things and shared it all. The service is as you would expect in a cheap, BYO restaurant. It's perfect and suits the whole environment! I've never had anyone be rude, they're just doing business and aren't there to earn tips.
Seriously don't understand these bad reviews... People are just far too fussy. If you want a fancy, silver service restaurant then go to one instead of complaining about authentic, good quality restaurants like Tay Do.
To be honest, the staff here aren't that great. They can be rude sometimes but then again it does work both ways? If you're an absolute pain to them then they might put on a strop. I came here with a group of friends around 9pm. A little packed, but I guess it was packed for a reason. If the food is so terrible as people are saying it to be, then why is it always packed? This is the definition of authentic vietnamese food. I recommend the scallops, they were bursting with flavour. Overall, Tay Do has good quality food and for the price, you'll definitely get your money's worth.
Food can be hit or miss but staff are always unbelievably rude. After the last visit (constantly ignored by waiting staff and then ordered to leave as soon as the restaurant got busy) I have sworn to never ever go here again. There are so many excellent alternatives in the area that I can't understand why anyone would subject themselves to poor - average food and the most ignorant waiting staff in London.
You are such a no nothing about food person. This restaurant is a true jem in London, I've known it since 2004. And yes, if you don't know anything about Vietnamese food, the menu can be difficult. Thats because they have 'standard' style main course items that are a bit Chinesey, you just have to read between the lines and stick with the classics. Excellent food!
This place used to be very good but has gone down hill in terms of the quality of the food offered. Staff is pretty rude but that ha always been the case. If you don't like what you are given, don't complain, it can get a little frightening. Unless you are a brave soul, go to the other vietnamese a few seconds down the road. You may have to queue as it is always busy with people. And for a good reason!
