Tina, We Salute You

Tina’s puts you instantly at ease: the large communal table in the middle (sofas and a handful of pavement tables also available for early arrivers) – populated with help-yourself jars of Marmite and jam, and locals helping each other with the Guardian crossword – feel like your best friend’s kitchen table. Regulars work their way towards a lifetime discount by getting a star on the wall every time they buy a coffee; by the looks of things, Duncan, Andy M and Emma have a serious Tina habit. The café’s namesake is a glamorous ‘60s model who graces the wall, alongside an anything-goes mix of artwork and flyers for local events.

Owners Danny and Steve make all the cakes at home, just as they have done since they first started running a cupcake stall off Brick Lane. A comforting breakfast menu (poached eggs, pancakes with berries, porridge) eases itself into lunch (toasted sandwiches, bagels, ploughman’s). The beans with chorizo had sold out by the time we arrived, but fluffy American pancakes showed attention to detail with a buttery maple sauce, tart berries, and a dusting of icing sugar and oats. The ‘breakfast trifle’ is a triumph of granola, fruit and a dash of lemon curd. Tina’s also serves consistently good coffee; expand your tastes beyond the usual latte with a Gibraltar (between a mini latte and a large macchiato). Cash only.

Fantastic coffee, fantastic food and fantastic staff! Such a nice vibe. One of the most relaxing places in London.

Boweeee

I had high hopes after seeing the online reviews for this place and unfortunately I was not impressed as expected. Arriving just after 4.30 on a Sunday I was hoping for a late lunch but the kitchen was closed, instead I ordered a flat white coffee and an almond croissant which was sitting on the counter with whatever was left over from the day. The staff was friendly and nice and I sat inside which had an ok vibe although the music was a bit too jazzy for my liking. To my horror I found the croissant very stale and hard, as if it had been sitting out all weekend...not even my coffee could soften it back to life! Speaking of which the coffee was good but just average not at all creamy and as delicious as I had read in previous reviews. In desperation I might return for a coffee but I definitely wouldn't make the effort to come here again...sorry Tina, maybe it's time you shimmied back to life!

The most delicious coffee I've had in a long time! The milk is rich and creamy, yet the fruitiness of the coffee really cuts through. Service is warm, casual and friendly. Pancakes with berries were scrumptious beyond belief! Incredibly generous serving of berries and marscapone too. Have been there three times this week, and will be back for more...

Lovely pancakes, shame theres not too many other veggie options. Im pregnant but wanted to try their "amazing coffee so I asked for a decaff and they sort of sneered a "we dont do decaff" at me and then i asked for a tea and it was not loose leaf tea as stated on some other reviews. Will recommend to anyone who is not pregnant or veggo!

I live across the road. Love pretty much everything about Tina's except its popularity.
