A gentle spruce-up has brought even more bamboo latticing and a delicate wall-sized mural to this local favourite. No change to the food, though: it remains as reliable and tasty as ever. Away from the weekend mania of Shoreditch’s Vietnamese corridor, this Hackney Central restaurant has managed to expand its own buzzy, mixed crowd of faithfuls, thanks in no small part to the arrival of the Hackney Picturehouse cinema virtually opposite. Families, groups of friends and couples keep the patient, helpful staff busy with questions about a menu that ranges from ever-popular peking duck, hearty pho soups and fresh fat summer rolls, to a great selection of stewed hotpots, sizzling meats and seafood dishes. We tried a wonderfully crunchy and perfectly cooked crispy soft-shelled crab, and chilli salt and pepper squid that ranked among the best we’ve tasted. A £19 set menu brings together some of Tre Viet’s best dishes, with a nicely varied range of mains. Alternatively, given the consistently strong selection, you could let the movie you’ve just seen inspire your choices. We’ve never had a dud dish yet.
