This new caffe-bar on Old Compton Street in Soho is also a wine bar. When we visited Tuscanic 'Merende' (‘merende’ meaning ‘snack’) in the opening weeks, we liked what was on offer: our mixed platter of charcuterie and cheese included slices of on-trend lardo and fennel-spiked salami; caprino (a hard goats’ cheese) with a rind of matted hay; and tiny glazed bowls of mild pickled onions and roasted artichokes.
We also sampled a mellow, comforting ‘bread soup’ (pictured), with its warming base of tomato-soaked crumbs; and a properly-made cappuccino.
It’s an attractive space, complete with designer-ish wood tables, a steel sink and retro meat-slicer, while the all-Italian staff are supremely genial. The shelves are groaning with swanky deli goods.
