Fryer's Delight is a defiantly unreconstructed chippy, which is great if you like tradition: black and white tiled floors, Formica-topped tables, big portions, small prices, and that simply indefinable satisfaction that comes from tucking into a plate of fish and chips with bread and butter and a cuppa.

The 50-year-old bill of fare on the wall offers 'peas (mushy)', as well as the intriguing 'chop' sauce (Hammond's brand brown sauce). If you're looking for reassurances on sustainable fish, own-made tartare sauce or interactive service, then look elsewhere. But the stream of customers (Fryer's has a reputation as a cabbies' favourite) who crowd in throughout the day to share the booths don't care a jot about such niceties. Everything fried here is reliably good, if not astounding. Fish and chips as it should be, some might say.

Went for lunch here today based on this recommendation, and was really pleased. Good value for money, good service and big portions. Good cup of tea as well! They don't take credit cards though, so make sure you visit an ATM first.

I'm from San Francisco, where we actually have one great chippy. When in the UK we are looking for better. It wasn't until Fryer's Delight that we found one. Exceptional cod and chips! Fine textured, crunchy batter. The staff was English when we were there - and very helpful and informative. We hope to make it to another chippy or two on this trip, but we Have To get back to Fryer's Delight,

I love this place and often seek it out for its no-frills, no pretension, straight up great fish and chips. Before coming here, I had never contemplated getting bread and butter with my standard plate of f+chips. Since spotting it on the menu however, I cannot do without it. Highly recommend, feels like your local chippy bang slap in central London.
