Lord only knows how many people have slogged up Edgware Road to Meya Meya, only to then stand aghast at its sanitised takeaway interior before turning and shuffling off back down the street. Pity them for not knowing that the restaurant proper actually lies down a pokey flight of stairs, and that it's here where those in the know dine on the Egyptian fiteers (stuffed filo pastry envelopes most closely resembling a pizza) for which Meya Meya is best known: the Cairo fiteer, for example, contains a hearty helping of smoked beef (basturma) alongside tomatoes, peppers and olives. Those willing to explore the menu will find plenty of alternatives to fiteer, including Egyptian staples such as fuul and falafel - the former well seasoned, the latter crunchy on the outside, authentically green and fluffy within. It might not look like much, but Meya Meya is full of surprises.

For anyone hankering for Egypt its the real thing. Such great value. I have been several times and chef only brings his A game every time. The pickles are fabulous and the fatta delicious. The fiteer is great but go for the hawawshi or molokheya and rice. Just like ommi makes!

Try the falafel wrap with feta & tomato, a special coffee & a rice pudding. Love this place & the amazing service.

Have to admit I was one of those who walked away the first time...

Though when I finally did try it I couldn't have been happier. True authentic food and atmosphere that made me feel for a while like I was back in Egypt.
