If you miss your Polish granny, or feel life has cheated you by denying you one, repair to Patio with haste. The olde worlde charm - ornate gold-framed mirrors, upright piano, worn red carpet - of the cosy dining room evokes a grandmother's sitting room. Caring and friendly service and hearty, authentic flavours continue the theme. Tasty brown and white bread comes with butter and smalec (a spread made of rendered pork fat dotted with bits of bacon). The extensive menu and lists of specials cover most Polish comfort food. Red borscht was the perfect starter: a wonderfully rich and vibrant broth with three meaty dumplings. We followed this with classic golabki (cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and meat and flooded with sweet tomato sauce). Enormous platters of roast potatoes, rich spiced shredded beetroot, and radish and corn in mayonnaise, were served on the side. Dessert might seem impossible after this, but is worth the effort. Fresh fruit and divine doughnut-like pieces of sponge coated in coconut(complimentary snacks while you consider afters) could well finish you off. But the brave should follow the waitress's advice, and plump for coffee, dessert or a soothing vodka.

Had I known what was in store, I would have fasted that day in preparation. As it was, I left unsatisfied - I was unable to fit in the massive feast comfortably. Oh, but I wanted to eat more, I just could not.
I had the blini and the duck, for the record. Both were unreasonably delicious. The duck flaked off the bone into a rich apricot sauce that caused me to almost lose consciousness in delight.
I'm not exaggerating on how good this food is. I went to Dinner by Heston last night and spent £150 and dreamed the whole time of the £15.50 menu at Patio. This is now my favourite restaurant in London, which is dangerous as I live in Shepherd's Bush. When you go (and you will), please check my pulse as I will be sprawled out on the floor, gorged on Polish delicacies.
I think £15.50 for the 3 course set menu makes the food good value. I've paid almost that amount in some lousy pubs for a single plate of some lousy food. Far too many really. I enjoyed the food here, red borscht followed by golbaki with sides of honey beetroot, saute potatoes and an interesting salad. Fresh strawberries and ice cream for afters. I like the atmosphere of the place. It feels a bit like an old dining room. I would have preferred to have had a menu in Polish with English translations rather than essentially an English menu especially as the young lady who was serving had only a meagre grasp of English. I don't like being given bread with no mention of a charge only to find £160 on the bill at the end. This isn't Italy is it? I also didn't enjoy paying £3.60 for a bottle of still water. The service was a bit rushed and there was a feeling of being pushed along. There was no reason to, there was hardly likely to be a 21:30 rush for tables.
great value for money and very generous portions. good atmosphere and friendly service. would most def go here again. don't miss the borscht.
