Ram's may be a large, very simply decorated café with functional furniture and wipe-clean surfaces, but it's held in high regard and booking is prudent even on weeknights.
The main draw is the vegetarian Surti cuisine (from Surat, a district of Gujarat), though the lengthy menu includes dishes from the Punjab right down to Kerala, plus a couple of Indochinese options such as hakka noodles. As in Surat, the choice of wheat breads is a point of pride, and Ram's speciality, puran puri, is easily the best we've found in London. The delectable dahi puri (crisp-shelled Mumbai street snacks doused in tangy yoghurt) challenge all rivals too. Another highlight: kachori, deep-fried globes of sweet peas and spices, served with smooth fresh chutneys. Of the main courses, Surti choices of spinach and fenugreek bhajia, and dal dhokri (strips of lentil pancake cooked in dal) easily outclassed the claggy vegetable biriani.
Had we any room after the creamy saffron and almond lassi with nut flakes bouncing around the glass, we might have ordered the own-made kulfi, falooda or shrikhand. Staff couldn't have been nicer, though a couple of large parties meant that our food took some time to arrive.
