Pasta restaurant: Italian

An upmarket haunt for Maida Vale locals, this slightly cramped venue is spread over a ground floor and basement, and also does brisk business in takeaway orders. Dine-in customers come here mainly for posh pizzas, pastas and risottos, though they might also choose one of the rustic Italian specialities for added interest.

A crisp first course of shredded raw beetroot, almonds, courgette and carrots, tossed in a lemony dressing, worked well as a light tease. To follow, Red Pepper's own-made pasta delivers quality results; ravioli, generously filled with chunky chopped prawns, fresh tuna and chilli, made a lovely match with a simple buttery sauce. Sadly, our pizza wasn't in the same league, let down by a chewy, too doughy base. Well-priced wines keep costs on the right side of good value.
