Operating in a former pie and mash shop, Shanghai Dalston is a testament to London's multi-culturalism. Grab a seat in one of the wooden booths in the front half of the restaurant and admire the Edwardian furnishings - tiled walls, a marble bar, and mirrors aplenty. Karaoke rooms can be hired too, adding another dimension to this remarkable venue.

The kitchen produces a range of regional dishes from across China, including interpretations of fiery Sichuanese and mild Shanghainese flavours. But its strength is the Cantonese selection, of which dim sum is the star.

Vegetarian yam croquettes were perfectly fried, producing a crisp, flaky outer coating; ha gau crystal prawn dumplings were generously filled with plump and sweet prawns; and the pan-fried turnip paste with meat in XO sauce was moreish.

We also enjoyed the roast meats: roast duck was tender, and although the crispy pork slices were slightly over-salted, the crackling was irresistibly crunchy. Takeaway is also available, but the helpful, attentive staff make dining-in a pleasure.

Whilst this place has an amazing interior the dim sum in there is disgusting - it was almost inedible. We tried 4 different types and each one was awful. We also had a meat dish with rice which was ok but it's definitely not worth 5 stars (it was also quite expensive as well)

Great. Amazing sky lights and authentic ambience. Definitely worth a visit if Dim Sum is your thing.
