The airy, well-ordered dining room attached to Southwark Cathedral fills up with older customers looking for a civilised lunch. It's run like a canteen, with friendly servers dishing up hot, freshly made dishes (pastas, soups and moreish salmon, haddock and prawn fish cakes) for reasonable prices (from about £6.95 for a main meal). The trimmings are all cooked with loving attention to detail - such as the roast new potatoes with shimmering, crackly skins thrown together with caramelised shallots. The stone floor, large vases of lilies and adjacent courtyard make it a pleasant space to eat in; it's excellent for a coffee break too, thanks to a triumphantly good set of cakes and biscuits, own-made puffed rice slabs topped with chocolate, or sticky marmalade flapjacks.

Why do you give Southwark Cathedral only two stars after such a good write up - I love it - beautifully peaceful, you can hear yourself think, and its not a big rip-off. As a 'young person' I think this is a great hidden oasis and I meet my other younger mates here by choice.
