Tate Modern Café: Level 2

Tate Modern's big, bustling entrance-level café has something for everyone: light snacks (meat platters, bloomer sandwiches); main courses that aim higher than they need to (pork cutlet with a salad of pak choi and shiitake) plus a proper wine list; posh breakfasts (duck egg!); afternoon tea; floor-to-ceiling views out to the Thames; and award-winning industrial chic design.

It's suitably patriotic too, promoting Cornish mackerel, crisp-battered fish and chips, St Jude's ice-cream, and some particularly interesting English cheeses. An exciting beer menu has been lovingly sourced from smaller UK breweries - our Kernel Black IPA coming from mere streets away.

Children are enthusiastically catered for, with a free children's meal for every adult main course at lunch - though portions are small and the dishes nursery staples: over-eights might find themselves hungry, and more sophisticated youngsters may prefer a smaller portion of an adult meal.

Although it was clear from all our dishes that ingredients are fresh and good quality, we'd have preferred the burger a lot rarer (or, at least, to have been asked how we wanted it cooked). It's usually very busy; try to get a window table for a more relaxed, less institutional experience.
