The dining room of this impressive Victorian pub opposite Acton Green Common has been sympathetically restored: hung with art deco-style chandeliers (cleverly gilded and coloured), and adorned with carved cherubs around a magnificent vast skylight. Tables are well spaced, and there are sizeable banquettes to suit large groups. The room leads to a spacious beer garden via splendid french windows - take your glass of Rioja or pint of Sagres out here in summer. The atmosphere is buzzy and jolly, like the staff, and the bar can become positively clamorous with young, well-heeled punters, partly due to the acoustics created by the high ceiling.

The menu is an appetising blend of traditional British food (roast beef with all the trimmings, fish and chips) and tempting Spanish dishes, such as delicious tapas, black rice with grilled cod and aïoli, and seafood paella in large portions. A highlight is the bread, made daily on the premises in white and brown versions. Desserts are a bit hit and miss; the meringues seemed shop-bought, but the fruit filling them was fresh and tasty. Prices are fair: yet another reason for the Duke's popularity.

Very poor rating from timeout here - I can only imagine they want to keep others from going? Food is superb, so authentically Spanish..

I suggest Time Out revisit and re-evaluate this 2* editors rating. Farcical. This pub is brilliant. Quality Spanish-fusion fare. Menu also bolstered by probably the best Finsh n' Chips I have ever had.

How can you only give it 2! It's one of the best gastropubs places around!

The waiters were fine and friendly, but the food was re-heated and burnt and even then tasteless. Sorry but the food was appalling. I

Amazing food, very knowledgable service and a lovely atmosphere. The review must have had a very very off day as can't agree with the negative comments at all!

I likewise was pretty happy with this place. The setting is very good, the menu range very good, the food resonable and the service very good. The ales were well served.

Wow - I can only imagine Time Out were reviewing a different pub or they have made some other fatal error when reviewing this pub. The food is brilliant and always has something different on the menu (along with some of the old classics)! The attentive service is complemented by the relaxed and lively atmosphere that the Duke of Sussex exudes. Just lovely. Time Out should "spruce up" their review of they are to keep with the thoughts of the public.

Lived in Chiswick for a year with my family, and dined there weekly (at least). My only complaint is that they would sometimes run out of my favorite dish (Chicken Pie). If you don't think something as pedestrian as a Chicken Pie can be elevated to greatness, you need to visit. The Sunday Roast with Yorkshire Pudding is probably the best comfort food dish I've eaten. The combination of this pub and The Swan (down the road) firmly establish Chiswick as a must-visit for gastropub enthusiasts.

I'm looking forward to returning to the Duke when I vacation in London this fall.

I wonder if the reviewer visited the same pub that I have frequented from time to time. I have no criticism of the food or the service which is always friendly and unflappable regardless of the fact that the place does get very busy. They even have time to offer dogs a biscuit and a dish of water when you come through the door. The prices are so much more affordable than many gastropubs in the Chiswick /Hammersmith area. I would urge ther review to give it another try.

I have to say I disagree with this review. I have always found the food and atmosphere to be good. The service varies but is always acceptable to good. I love the fact that the food is different to other local pubs but that the setting is lovely. I don't need to have British food just because I'm sitting in a Victorian room. I would recommend this pub without hesitation.

I agree with the previous comments, this is a great place for relaxed casual dining with good food, good atmosphere and good real ales.

I agree. I always find the food here fantastic and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. I am very surprised at the low TO rating, as I usually follow TO religiously for restaurants. Just goes to show. I would highly recommend the Duke of Sussex.

I;ve just read the time out review. I'm a bit shocked. It's my local, I drink there often, and I eat there sometimes. Every time I've been, the food was great and the service was good. And as the review says, great building, excellent selection of beers, great wine list.
The overall Spanish style of the menu does not mean you can't get typical "British" dishes. The only drawback is that you don't get a "typical" gastro pub experience I guess(i.e. British roast or Thai). But that's a plus in my book.
Definitely a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon. I love my beers and they always have three independent beers on the tap, which are always lovely.
