Chef-patron Malcolm John's first restaurant in South Croydon (the second is Fish & Grill) has been a hit since opening; it won our Best Local Restaurant award in 2008. Burgundy paintwork, together with red-and-gold striped banquettes, and floral wallpaper provide a smartly feminine setting; black-aproned staff zip about in a professional manner. Food - traditional French with a focus on the south-west, home of the hearty pork, duck and bean stew after which the restaurant is named - is reliably excellent. The place was humming for Sunday lunch, no doubt because of the bargain set menu: eight choices apiece for mains and starters, six for dessert, many identical to the carte and amply portioned. Dishes may be rustic in origin, but there's nothing basic about the cooking or presentation. Witness the thin discs of pressed pinky-white octopus in a starter salad, with fennel shavings, orange segments and capers. For mains, rabbit pie, presented in its own mini metal pot, was brimming with tender meat, carrots and mushrooms beneath a flaky pastry crust. Fleshy, juicy tiger prawns were simply cooked in a buttery chilli-garlic sauce. To finish, vanilla-speckled crème brûlée provided the perfect mix of cream and crunch. The all-French wine list (with half-litre carafes) is worth scrutinising.

Facilities
Babies and children welcome ( high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Disabled ( toilet )What a terrible shame it was a triple celebration today with my mum ,step mum for mothers day and it is my birthday as well. We arrived on time but our table was 15 minutes late. We were not asked if we wanted to hand our coats in when others had. The service was poor it took 2 attempts and another 20 minutes for a beer that had been missing from our drinks order to arrive. The mains came out and the waitress tried to place my main on top of the empty soup dish still not cleared from my starter, the starter dishes where all still on the table, the waitress who could see the plates there still then turned around to tell another member of staff that the table was not clear and still our food sat on the serving counter getting cold. We asked to see the manager but after 2 requests my father had to actually get up and walk trough the restaurant to speak to the manager. They did apologies and offer a discount and we haven't even had mains yet. Then my father and partner ordered the chauteaubriand with a £15 supplement which came but had obviously been placed under the grill to keep warm whilst our complaint was being dealt with, then this was dished up with bernaise sauce turning up after the steak main had been eaten. I regret that I would never eat in this establishment again. It was my birthday and the £100 discount given on the bill from an embarrassed manager could not remove the horrible taste that had been left in our mouth. It is a shame as I was really looking forward to this. We even stopped at tesco express to get dessert/cheese.
Not only the best restaurant in the area but a great restaurant by any standards, anywhere. Classical French cuisine interestingly re-interpreted, excellent wine list, good professional service and an enjoyable atmosphere. One could ask for nothing more!
