A quick lunch suggested that this Gordon Ramsay satellite could use a bit of sprucing up. The room remains the same long, low-slung, split-level space, with decoration unchanged since opening, and the bar still features imaginative (and hugely expensive) cocktails.
But the food, though good, just lacked sparkle. There are several options for ordering, of which the most affordable by far is a fixed-price menu of small dishes served at lunch and early evening. That's what we ate, with mixed results.
Chilled pea soup with shreds of ham hock and a pea salad was perfectly pleasant, yet not exceptional. An ingenious assembly of marinated beetroot, goat's curd and pine nuts was very tasty but a little too fiddly. The star of the show was salmon served with leek fondue and delectable brown shrimps, dressed with a vinaigrette and horseradish foam - perfectly roasted salmon, well-judged accompaniments. The dish showed that there's talent in the kitchen.
Maze was packed on our visit, and always is, according to our waiter. Service was careful and exceptionally friendly. Standard quibble: a pricey wine list, with very little under £40. If and when this pioneering restaurant regains its ability to dazzle and astonish, the wine prices will seem more acceptable. Amusement for geeks: the wine list is presented on an iPad.

Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking essential, Separate rooms for parties ( seating 8, 10 and 40 ), Available for hire, Disabled ( toilet ), Dress ( smart casual; no trainers )A couple of weeks back, my aunt and I went here on a TimeOut deal that meant we got the Early Supper Tasting menu with a Bellini cocktail at a really nice price!
I expected to walk out of there hungry given the wording of the menu, but actually, I was very full! And my aunt couldn't quite finish her last dish (the pork belly) so I ended up with it :-)
The restaurant was very atmospheric and busy on a Tuesday evening. Service was impeccable. Even tho' we were on a 'deal', we weren't treated any differently than other customers (that I could see). The wine menu comes to you on an iPad - very nice touch altho' I didn't take advantage of it. The selection of wines did seem pretty decent and, while not cheap, you could still get something reasonably priced by the glass.
Neither of us were desserts people so we stuck to the savoury selections on the tasting menu:
Jasmine and miso cured salmon, beetroot, compressed apple, horseradish cream
- Pressed chicken and foie gras, pear and saffron chutney, green tea caramel
- Roasted poussin breast, confit leg, ratte potato salad, spring onion, pancetta, poussin vinaigrette
- Braised pollock, razor clams, chilli, lime, coriander and purple sprouting broccoli
- Szechuan-spiced Suffolk pork belly, braised discovery apple, kale and onion confit
- Braised featherblade of beef, pomme purée, shimiji mushroom, togarasghi spice (I see they've changed this now to beef cheeks?)
It was all so good! My favourite has got to be the pork belly. But that is my dish of choice on most menus! I would recommend Maze based on the tasting menu. However, I would like to go back some other time and try the normal a la carte.
My friend and I dined at the Maze Grill on the 26th.Feb.8pm We both asked for steaks with chips & salad and a peppercorn sauce. Meals arrived with what was clearly not the creamy peppercorn sauce one is used to. It was Bisto at its best , not a sign of any peppercorns !We complained and asked instead for a Dianne sauce which arrived very shortly after looking exactly like the Bisto but with a few herbs thrown in ! I was hungry & ate my steak, the chips were dry , & would have appreciated some sauce. My friend left her entire meal, maybe a couple of bites of steak. The waiter tried to calm the waters with the offer of a free pudding but it was too late for any concilitary talk, we were presented with a reduced bill, we paid £78 instead of £100 and were back in our hotel by 9.15pm. We have tried to contact Gordon Ramsay or one of his reps. but have been unable to do so to date. So much for his article last September encouraging folk to complain more, he should look to his own websites firstly as there is no way of contacting him to complain of his chefs.
We had an absolutely awful Christmas Eve dinner here in 2011. The appetizers were fried and tasteless, and except for the roast turkey, which was very tender, the entire meal was lackluster and forgettable. We'd eaten the night before at Le Petit Masion just down the block which was wonderful, but were terribly disappointed with Maze.
We celebrate my wife's 40th birthday at Maze; poor choice.
I don’t mind restaurants being pretentious, serving small dishes for outrageous amounts…however the food was down right disastrous – I am not sure it's the best way to describe it – maybe disgusting works better.
What surprises me time and again is people ability to lie and convince themselves that this is a decent restaurant.
