Gastropub: Modern European

We arrived at the Peasant to a 1980s soundtrack, and suspect the decor hasn't changed much since those days. The first-floor restaurant was hosting a wine tasting, so we opted for the bar menu and discovered that the once-great cooking of one of London's first gastropubs seems to have dipped spectacularly.

A 'broad beans, beetroot and baby turnip' starter arrived without beans, went back and was presented again with a few tough beans added, plus a single halved turnip so hard that it flew off the plate during our attempt to spear it. 'Trout rillettes' on toast was better, but not rillettes - more 'trout mixed in horseradish'. The best dish was the well-done ('medium rare' was ordered) house burger: a generous, well-seasoned patty on a bun with bacon and cheese, served with tasty hand-cut chips.

The crowd-pleasing drinks list includes speciality beers and wines from around the world. Our friendly, lone barman did his best, but failed to offer new glasses when we switched from white to red wine. During a quiet night here, both the food and service were disappointing.

Recently went to the Peasant for dinner and subsequently went again for Sunday roast as the food was outstanding. Even my vegetarian friend was amazed at the attention to veggie food - no pastas or risottos on the menu. The Sunday roast was no less spectacular - if a little too filling (can that be a complaint?) and with 8 different roasts to choose from, it's definitely going to warrant repeat visits.

Amazing Place. Found this place after friends recommended it. We have been back numerous times and Sundays are our favourite day. The roasts are huge and tasty and the service is friendly and knowledgeable.

Really disappointed by my Sunday roast. Had the vegetarian option which in any other decent pub would have been a nut roast, chees tart, stuffed squash or mushroom option. However, here it was just the vegetables, no actual vegetarian option, and I paid £9.50 for the pleasure! The parsnips and carrots were undercooked, there was no gravy and the yorkshire was awful, burnt, dry and hollow. It was a real let down. Vegetrianism has been around for ages now, so theres no excuse for such a lame, uninventive plate of food. I wont go back.
