Although Tom Aikens first made his mark in haute cuisine, this brasserie is his stab at a more egalitarian style of cooking and service. It offers 'food for everyone and anyone' - as long as they can afford it. This is primarily a local for Chelsea Green residents; wear Thomas Pink or Joseph and you'll fit right in.
Still, the place is highly likeable. It's the comfort food that gets the attention - macaroni cheese, fish pie, beef burger, calf's liver with mash - but the menu is lengthy and extends to the likes of pan-fried foie gras with duck egg and Ventreche bacon.
We've had complaints of poor service, and suspect that on very busy nights the tables would feel unpleasantly cramped. However, with an upbeat crowd and a bit of room for manoeuvre, the vibe is jolly good fun. Even better is a quiet breakfast time, when you can linger over superb pancakes and well-made coffee.
The decor - white brick tiles, marble counters, sleekly chunky wood furniture - was ahead of its time and still looks the business. The branch at Somerset House doesn't have quite the same verve, but the location is a draw nevertheless.

Facilities
Babies and children welcome ( high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Booking advisable ( dinner and weekends ), Separate rooms for parties ( seating 22 and 40 ), Disabled ( toilet )Roast beef on Sunday was excellent. Great food and great service in a setting full of character. Highly recommended.
Our food took 1 hour and 45 minutes to arrive and was shamelessly overpriced. £20 for a chicken schnitzel which tasted like a breaded chcken breast from Marks and Spencer drenched in balsamic vinegar. The wine was £25 a bottle and tasted like it should have been £4.99. Never again.
Good food and nice environment, but the service is among the worst I have had in a very long time. Rude, slow and pretentious. Will not be coming back.
The eggs Florentine were gourgeous! And if you like sweet, then try the pancakes. Congratulations guys! Best breakfast I have had in London.
In short - terrible service, mediocre food, ridiculously overpriced.
Booked a table for 5 and shown to a table for 4 and told that we can just "squeeze in" the extra person. When we said no, we were seated at another table. Not long after, we were told that we'll have to move as the table where were sitting was booked.
After we sat down, the waitress disappeared and it took over 20 minutes for her to return from wherever she went. Drinks took FOREVER to arrive; some people at the table received their food while others had to wait; and we didn't get everything we ordered.
Best of all, no apology was forthcoming even after we highlighted the poor service.
The food was ok - but there are many grills that offer the same menu at half the price.
Atmosphere is good.
In short - don't go there!
Nice food and atmosphere. Friendly staff. But they forgot to give me the cup of tea I ordered...
food very poor, staff so so, dident get the extras that we orderd.
boy was it expensive i dont mind paying if its nice but it wasent.
go to zilli fish instead.
Food was great, but the staff and service were atrocious. After ordering each item the server came back to ask if we wanted to modify it in some strange way. If I wanted something different I would have said so when I ordered it.
I ordered ONE iced coffee and they gave me two. When I said I ordered only one they questioned me. I ordered a banana milkshake and got vanilla. Although the vanilla shake was very good, not what I ordered.
I had to wait 15 minutes to get the attention of the server for the bill and another ten to use my card.
To cap it off, tight quarters made it difficult to get in and out of tables and required customers to work together, but apparently my pregnant wife was not moving fast enough and the server stuck behind her, as she was waiting for someone in front of her to move her chair in to get out, put her serving chair in my wife's back. Apparently to "help" her move more quickly, as I'm sure the server was in a hurry to offer abysmal service to some other customers.
Too bad because the food is great. Maybe repeat business is not part of the business model
