This grande dame of Theatreland has no need to show off: its reputation as an iconic seafood restaurant precedes it. Passers-by can't see in from the street, which lends low-key mystery to the warren of tables, mostly tucked-up booths squeezed under lowish ceilings. Black and white portraits of stars of the stage and screen line the walls, but decor is modest, and seemingly untouched by the passage of time. Waiting staff are smartly suited, professional and courteous.
Dining is more casual than you might imagine from a Caprice Holdings venue: trad, not stuffy, and increasingly touristy. Importantly, head chef Richard Kirkwood's menu is so delightfully varied - fruits de mer, potted shrimps, pickled herrings, pan-fried ray wing, even fried cod tongues - that you never feel in the slightest bit limited. Baked smoked haddock tart had the touch of a fine pastry chef, while a special of slip soles benefited from buttery, lemon-spiced shrimps.
Dishes aren't cheap (mains hover around £20, and sevruga or beluga caviar cost serious cash), but the freshness is phenomenal. According to the menu, meat dishes are also available, but really, why bother? Note that the grand, horseshoe-shaped Oyster Bar next door (a 2008 addition) keeps conveniently long hours, and booking is not required.
Sorry, booking is not available at the moment.

Words are not sufficient to tell you how good our meals were. I started with a Fish Bisque that was absolutely devine. Fishy, creamy, wonderful taste. It was so good I was sorry it was over. My main I had the Fish Stew. Let me say that this was the tastiest broth for a fish stew i ever had! And ther was a lot of fish and potatoes and broth and OMG! I really cannot over emphasize how utterly spectacular this dish was. I was very very pleased. My fiance started with the fresh Smoked Salmon and she was in La la land. I had a few bites and it was so Salmony and fresh and wonderfully smoky....ummm ummmm. She also had the Monkfish wrapped in pancetta with a sort of Hollandaise and Poached Egg on Top. She loved it and I had a bite and it was so good! This place I give 9.5 stars only because I havent found perfect yet but this was very close. I dont even want to tell you what happened after we had the Fresh Strawberries with Strawberry Cream and Clotted Cream...just let your imagination run wild!. J Sheekys, we will be back! And im telling everyone how amazingly good your food is! Bravo!
