It's a treat to duck out of the grime and chaos of King's Cross and into this curvaceous canal-side venue. If weather permits, the riverside patio is great for sipping white wine and watching the ducks and barges cruise past; inside is more problematic. The decor is somewhat incongruous, as if, faced with all the curving space and the wall-to-wall windows, the architects just chucked about some dark wood and navy material and fled. Fortunately, the food is more successful: asparagus in season, with a pleasingly tart hollandaise; avocado and tomatoes that actually give your taste buds employment in a bacon salad starter. Main courses were variable. The Northumberland beef is apparently hung for 35 days, but our steak was distinctly chewy. The lamb was much better - soft and succulent. But though hand-cut twice-cooked chips looked hefty and expertly fried, they tasted unpleasant. In recompense, Rotunda's wine list is terrific: an immense range, with interesting choices across the price points. Beware if you indulge too freely, however: the toilets are miles away, and pretty much devoid of signage.

Facilities
Tables outdoors ( 50, terrace ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Booking advisable, Separate room for parties ( seats 24 ), Disabled ( toilet )Always interesting how ones expectations set you up for an evening. My guests booked at this place so I wasn't clued up before I arrived but, perhaps due to not knowing about this place at all, was amazed that I hadn't heard of such a fine restaurant that had been on my doorstep all along.
Great food from a farm they own. The two-person beef cuts were amazingly succulent and the service was friendly but formal.
Thoroughly good evening. I shall be returning soon.
11 of us went to the resturant for christmas meal. Great place, but the food and the service of napkin collector let them down. We were still drinking our wine and coffee when one of the waiter came and started collecting the napkins as they had get these to the laundry room. This has never happened before in any resturant i have ever been to. It was not cheap. Also near the end they turned the heating off as if to get rid of people. I assume to get the laundry done in time. I will not go back to this place again.
I'm sorry the other reviewers didn't enjoy this but after my experience I really want to go back. My friend had octopus salad and fine, tender beef, and I had Really good mushroom veloute to start and Shepherd's Pie - all four dishes prepared well and served quickly, unobtrusively and with great charm. For my taste, the veloute could have improved only by being slightly smaller. Other than that, really, neither of us could fault the food. It's good value for London, too. The setting, on a warm spring evening next to the Regents Canal... what's not to like? Really sorry other reviewers didn't like it - but it'll be easier for me to get another table I guess...
What can I say, this is my first one star review. My partner and myself walked past this place a couple of weeks before we went and said to each other that looks like a really nice place. It's true it dose look like a really nice place and when you walk in you think wow. A very nice location overlooking the cannel and to be honest the food was amazing. Five stars to the chefs, but that's where the pleasantries end. When we walked in not a single staff member greeted us and we stood waiting for some time. After a staff member had seen us waiting we asked for a table for two and after some time we were seated. We were offered water and then our menus were brought to us. Our order was taken and our meals came out very quickly. At no point during the meal were we approached to ask if we were happy with our meals, or even asked if we would like a drink, after we had finished our meals it took them almost 15 minutes to clear our table and we still weren't asked how our meals were or even asked if we would like to see the dessert menu. We did feel like dessert and a coffee after our meal but by the time someone came over with dessert menus we were well and truly over the customer service and just wanted to leave. The staff member who took my payment just stood there in silence as the transaction cleared then handed me the receipt and walked away. Never in a dinning experience have a ever been made to feel so uncomfortable, it really did feel like they didn't want us there. The lack in customer service was such a disappointment because the two of us both really enjoyed our meals. I would recommended giving this place a miss
My experience of the Rotunda at Kings Place ( Tuesday 14-10-10) was that I spotted a short menu of bar food at the entrance, decided on an item and asked one of the staff for this ( a small piece of fish with chips) with a glass of wine. After searching on his computerised till he came back to say that this wasnt available and here was another menu. When I queried why they posted it on the entrance menu if it was not available I was given a story about perhaps that outside menu was to indicate what food might be availabe if the place was booked for a party. I checked the menu again and reported back to same member of staff that it stated that the menu was served " Monday to Saturday". At which point I was treated to a helping of heavy sarcasm. This is s venue I shall avoid in future.
