Set in a grassy clearing in the ancient woodlands between Muswell Hill and Highgate tube, this café has a prime location. There are only six tables inside (popular at breakfast/brunch time), but on chilly days, the covered outdoor tables are warmed with wall heaters.
The large hedged-in terrace is packed with families in fine weather, but the last time we visited it was wet and stormy, and the juicy beefburger and chips was off the menu, as were all other main courses.
We settled for the only warm things to be had: carrot and ginger soup, and cheese and ham toastie, ordering some feta and red pepper dip, artichokes and pitta to bulk it out. We didn't need the extras, as the soup was a hearty bowl, a little salty, but full of hot root-ginger undertones and rich carrot flavour.
We can never decide between the almond, lemon and polenta cake, or the warmed brownies with ice-cream. So we had both. On busy days, you can buy coffee and ice-creams at a serving hatch to take away.

Facilities
Tables outdoors ( 30, garden ), Babies and children welcome ( children's menu; crayons; high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Disabled ( toilet ), Takeaway serviceWe went today for lunch, waited over an hour, eventually some food came, but not for the kids so we gave up. People all around us were fed up with waiting, and food was being sent back for all sorts of reasons including being cold. I will not go back again.

Although service is hit and miss (especially in summer when the crowds get the better of the staff) the food is lovely and very vegetarian-friendly. If you are planning on dropping in for a coffee and cake: try the plum muffin!
Amazing place, the best food and lovely staff! Always going to be your customer!
