These days it seems as if you can't visit a museum or gallery without finding that Messrs Peyton and Byrne have got there first, installing a Brit-themed eaterie. Happily, though, this café's food - displayed in a long deli counter - isn't the stuff of mass production.
We were impressed by a warm, doughy shortcrust pie packed with succulent slow-cooked beef, teamed with two simple but effective salads from a colourful Med-leaning selection (roasted butternut squash; puy lentils with diced peppers and red onions), all for £7.90.
Sweet treats are a forte, with pastries, flapjacks and own-made cakes offered. Walnut-studded carrot cake was moist and fluffy, though a pretty fairy cake had been suffocated by an excess of sickly butter-cream.
Service can be perfunctory, but the dining area is bright and futuristic, with high ceilings, candy-coloured seating and a shimmering light installation overhead. Thanks to the café's hidden location inside the Wellcome Collection (with bags checked at the door), you'll rarely have to fight for seats; it's a fairly well-kept secret.
