Fleet River Bakery
Enter this bakery's small front room and order at a bar displaying salads, sandwiches and cakes. If you wish to eat-in, balance your tray up and down the steps leading to the rustic backrooms, filled with a random mix of tables, mismatched chairs, an old radiator, an art deco clock and even a church hymn board. We can see what the owners are trying to achieve, but the decor slightly misses the mark.
Unsurprisingly, the best things to choose here are the baked goods. All breads and cakes are freshly made on site and taste wonderful. The varied daily lunch menu is available from noon. On our visit, a precisely balanced gazpacho came with fruity olive bread. 'Forbidden fruit cake' was simply an apple slice, but it had a juicy filling and was baked to perfection. Wholemeal bread for breakfast is also delightful, and best warmed in the toaster provided - enjoy it with a cup of Monmouth coffee.

Tables outdoors ( 4, pavement ), Babies and children admitted, Takeaway serviceI go to this cafe most mornings because the coffee is great and the seats downstairs are nice and out of the way of the Holborn hustle and bustle.
But I don't look forward to being greeted by the same miserable staff members every day. Either they have severe amnesia, or they're just that rude, because despite showing up 3-out-of 5 days a week and ordering the same thing, it's the same blank, smug expressions on their faces every morning, and the same ignorance to my simple repetitive cappuccino order.
The tall guy with the beard is nice, as is the girl with the dark hair. The others make up for the lack of bitterness in their excellent coffee by displaying in abundance in their shitty attitude.
The prices are a laugh too.
The quiche was nice, the salad was completely unimaginative (come on - there's so much you can do with raw vegetables - a few leaves and cut-too-thick onion slices is not a salad in 2011.
The serving girl was surly.
Wouldn't recommend.
The Monmouth coffee is sublime but the attitude of the staff leaves a lot to be desired - and this is coming from a regular customer. If the coffee wasn't so good I wouldn't go there.
The lunches and cakes here are very good, and they make a great flat white, but the service is bad to dire, so much so that a lunchtime visit can only ever be frustrating. Kastner and Ovens (whilst only takeaway), on nearby Floral Street, offers similar or tastier food at better prices and with competent and charming service.
Just stumbled on this place, the selection of cakes was inspired - I could easily have gone all out but had just eaten so plan on going back . I did, however, grab a baked chocolate tart for my walk back to work. Also suprised by the good value of the place most similar 'trendy cafes/bakeries' are way over priced in London.
not quite up to scratch - hot choc was ok but my piece of cake was stale.... I should have complained....
Very lukewarm service despite the place being quite. Acceptable but mediocre food was not enough to salvage the bad impression the staff gave...
posters of bloomsbury bowling lanes give this place away as being owned by bthem. No matter coffee is great and they have shaved ice drinks..yum yum.
"Been there done that" Not sure about that. Can't think of many cafes who go to the effort to make their own food from sctrach. A lot of the tredy lot just make good coffee and are fakeries...they buy in bring trendy bakeries! Keep the great work up fleet girls. Loved the article in the Times.
