What to expect from the brasserie at the gallery of Charles Saatchi, arguably the most powerful man in contemporary art? Instances of the super-collector's taste are evident, as you'd hope (artworks are selected from web showcase Saatchi Online). A giant sculpted shoe clings to the back wall, and a gaping-mouthed neon nude kneels resplendent on all fours high above the tables, but there the outrageousness ends and the professionalism begins.
Gallery Mess - with its enviable Chelsea location, listed interior with vaulted ceiling, and terrace overlooking Duke of York Square - is a grown-up operation, every bit as slick and assured as Saatchi's meteoric career. Clientele are a fairly mixed group, from out-there art appreciators to the conservative gentlefolk of SW3. Thankfully, staff are courteous regardless.
The seasonal menu offers light, well-balanced dishes, seeing the day through from breakfast to late supper. Chicken breast with quinoa and pomegranate salad was fresh and sparky; south-coast fish in a bag came with a bird's nest of potato strips and a tangle of potato fries, served on a newspaper-print square of paper. Such dishes are artfully presented (of course), but there's substance to this style: a new 'sensation', perhaps.

The interior of the restaurant is nice and elegant in it's simplicity and created a nice atmosphere for me and boyfriend to enjoy our evening meal. I had the chickpea and mint soup to start with - fresh and delicious to taste - and salmon and cod fishcakes as my main, really enjoyable! I finished with simply amazing chocolate and honey cheesecake, really worth betraying my New year's resolutions for!
The staff was really helpful and very attentive. I will be definitely recommending this place to my friends!
I have been into the Gallery Mess a few times now, and have enjoyed each visit. The waiting service is always pleasant, and look very sharp. This past visit I had the Chicken breast. It was cooked perfectly, and very juicy.
I will definitely recommend, and have to friends.
Went last night. Really not up to any kind of standard, appears simply to do business because it's in the heart of Chelsea. Half empty. Had a burger - no offer of how I'd like it prepared (rare, well etc) - bad sign. Burger came. Just rubbish - bun overtoasted, burger done more than well (don't they trust their meat?!), almost too dry to eat. Chips good. Wine was thin, should have been robust.
Service was good. Waiting staff should chase the chef out and do it themselves.
Not worth the money, not worth the time. Hit reset.
