In folk circles, the Troubadour is a legend: Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake all played here, amid a '60s scene whose resonances live on more than four decades later.

In a cramped, cosy space brimming with copper utensils and Macmillan-era signage advertising British Railways and the renowned pens of MacNiven & Cameron, tourists and regulars lay into all-day breakfasts and plates of pie, mash and liquor, sipping on pints, glasses of shiraz and cups of tea.

Rothaus is the house beer, also in malt (Märzen) and shandy (Radler) varieties, with Hefeweizen and Pils coming by the bottle. There's also a Troubadour Blonde from Belgium and Fuller's London Pride on draught.

Down in the cellar, bands and poets still take to the stage.

Troubadour is one of those places that looks cool and relaxed from the outside. Sadly, it is anything but ... I have been there for breakfast a couple of times in the last week. While my breakfast, the yoghurt with muesli, was quite good and the coffee (I tried several versions) was passable, the atmosphere was strained and uncomfortable. There is a waiter who scowls at the customers while an elderly lady clutching a handbag paces about looking stressed. This, combined with an evident lack of customers - no matter what the time - certainly sours the atmosphere. A real pity as it is an excellent space with real promise.
