Restaurants & cafés: Turkish

Whitecross Street has become a destination for street food on Thurday and Friday lunchtimes, with stalls selling hog roast sandwiches, burritos, falafel wraps, jerk chicken and more besides. But in wintry weather, the indoor seating of the market street's cafés beckon. Iskele's the pick of them, a new 'Mediterranean' restaurant on a spacious site with coloured glass pendant laterns and other knick-knacks that give it an Anatolian feel.

Although the menu is wide-ranging and includes Italian pasta dishes and a few continental favourites, we recommend sticking with the Turkish dishes, as this is what they do best. The meze can be ordered in a small or large portions, the larger one - at £15.90 for two people - being a meal in itself. Highlights of the procession of small dishes included creamy houmous topped with broad beans and sprinkled with sumac; a warm salad of grilled aubergine, smoky from the char-grill; kisir, the salad of fresh parsley chopped up with tomatoes, crushed wheat, onion, olive oil and lemon juice; and deep-fried pastries filled with cheese called böreks.

Mediocre food; bad tempered service; far better middle eastern food around the city.

We found the Iskele by chance while staying in the Barbican area. We loved it so much we went there 3 nights running. The food was consistently good and the staff very nice and prices very reasonable. There is a lively buzz to the place and a nice mix of clientele, from couples to parties to families. We will go back next time we are in London, its worth making the effort.

i've been here once and keep meaning to come back and have finally booked to go. i found out about this place because of the group on offer late last year and the food was delicious. i don't know if it's changed since then but i'm excited to go back as a precursor to a sadler's well visit.

Last year, the Iskele had a really weird manager who was creepy and bullied the staff, and I never returned until I reluctantly was invited by a friend. I couldn't believe the amazing transformation since the creepy manager has left. The food is much much better, the staff are more relaxed, friendly and attentive and it was a real pleasure. I had a cracking night and have been back many times since. Well worth a visit. I would lose the plastic table cloths though. If another voucher offer comes along I am getting loads.

I have to say I've been here many times and never had a problem. The food's pretty good, and the staff are ok too. My only gripe is that my plate, knife, fork etc adhere themselves to the plastic table clothes, but other than that, I'd recommend it.

I was about to buy a voucher for this restaurant (Iskele, Whitecross St, Barbican) from www.groupon.co.uk, but saw these reviews, and also on www.urbanspoon.com and will definitively not going there. Thanks for the reviews!

Last evening we were there with my collegues.
We've been there before! But probably-never again! Everything was great but there was one thing that disturbed us-the smell coming straight from the table next to ours.
We've just had a look and guess?? There was a DOG under the table!!
We couldn't believe! May be people have to learn that when they go
to a restaurant they should leave their dogs outside. But first of all the owners should learn that till there are people who come in their place
to spend money they can't let this happen! or may be it's some kind of turkish tradition?? :) who knows...
The only thing I know is that I Will Never go there to spend even £1.
Everybody was laughing! So was I..

The rudest owner ever. I've seen him pushing a waiter until she cried, rejecting costumers because they don't follow some strange rules he only has in his brain. The food doesn't matter when you find such kind of unnaceptable behavior. Time out and all restaurants guide should include a chapter about middle age slavery in restaurants in London instead of assuming that we live in Dysneyland. Now you can censor this comment if you want. Food is important, people isn't, my dear censorship, don't you think?
