This refined townhouse restaurant, set across several floors, is very much at the 'haute' end of French cuisine, with almost as many waiters as diners, exquisite amuse-bouches and a seriously reverential atmosphere. While there are several multi-course menus (including a vegetarian choice), there's also a good-value set lunch/pre-theatre option (rising to excellent value if you take up the addition of half a bottle of wine).

From the latter, starters were more impressive than mains: a lovely langoustine and basil velouté had a tiny scallop-flavoured tortellino infused with a waft of lemon; a powerful beetroot risotto came with a pretty parmesan crisp. To follow, however, a charming arrangement of summer baby vegetables (stuffed with herbs and truffle, with a basil reduction) was insipid. Ginger-marinated organic salmon, with sprouting broccoli and red pepper and a fish reduction, was also a bit so-what.

One quirk on the menu is the introduction of calorie counts: who knew that the plate of unpasteurised French cheeses with garnish and biscuits racked up fewer calories (376) than strawberry vacherin (strawberries, meringue and vanilla ice-cream, 487) or golden louis XV (dark chocolate and praline, 480)? The charming sommelier will help you tackle the long wine list.

We eat out a lot, at good restaurants, in London, and Gauthier is the best, really, the best. If you haven't tried it then do. If money is a budget then try the set lunch menu, and go from there. Almost don't want to write this review because I always want to get a table there, but, they really deserve a wonderful review, we've been so many times. And Chef Alexis Gauthier has the most talented Sommelier, Roberto Della Pietra, with such reasonably priced knowledge, a joy! Enjoy. (We sound like we are in the 'business', but we really are not, can't exactly give out our phone number to prove the point, just see for yourself).

I've been to Gauthier a number of times now, and I do not really agree with the review here. Without a doubt, this is a restaurant worthy of 5-stars if there has ever been one. The black truffle risotto is one of the very best dishes I have ever eaten. I would recommend the wine taster menu, as the pairing of each course is absolutely incredible. It's also excellent value for the set lunch, with is about £30 for a three course meal (with some extras thrown in between courses) and a half bottle of wine per person.

As for the service, you couldn't do a whole lot better. I have always found the staff to be polite and extremely attentive. The sommelier is extremely knowledgable and really adds value by explaining how the flavours will pair with each course.

Stil my favourite restaurant.

Only visited once, for lunch, so I cannot comment on consistency. But I had the best lunch and best value lunch ever, replacing Pied a Terre in the latter category. Three good amuse bouches, attractive, interesting and tasty. Choice of 7 different bread rolls - the walnut, olive, chorizo, tomato and french I tasted were all excellent. A starter of scallops (2, large), langoustine (1), ginger jelly (good but not fantastic) and intense shellfish jus (maybe slightly too intense?) was cooked just right. Main course of pork loin, soft belly, cabbage mash and carrots was good but I felt the belly was underseasoned and improved a lot when eaten with my remaining piece of crorizo roll. I chose cheese rather than a dessert and had five pieces of high quality and interesting french cheeses (from a table of 16 or so). The wine (1/2 bottle) was an excellent red from Puglia. Although not having a coffee or tea, I was given 3x2 excellent petit fours. Some Michelin restaurants would have called this 5 courses, but it cost only £33, wine included. (Sparkling) water was free. What more can I say?
