Ice-cream shop: Italian

Gelaterias, like coffee shops, are cropping up all over London; we're simply spoiled for choice.

But with this ubiquity comes the difficulty of standing out from the crowd. La Gelatiera cleverly sets itself apart with fun design (a sort of colourful, messy chic rather than the sterile, modish aesthetic of most gelaterias), unusual flavours, and a menu that goes beyond simple cup and waffle cone.

As well as a sizeable counter of frequently changing gelati, there are own-made Italian cakes and biscuits.

A cooler is filled with gelato sandwiches and cute handmade mini Cornetto-style bites, both covered in top-notch chocolate with a satisfying snap. At £1 a pop, these make a satisfying little treat when a full scoop seems too indulgent.

The staff have an infectious enthusiasm for their product, encouraging patrons to try as many flavours as possible before making their selections; the highly recommended pistachio (made with nuts from Sicily) was indeed very good, with a deep buttery flavour and an addictive salty tang.

Sea-salted caramel is sure to be another favourite, but the mellow sweet potato has an unexpected allure, too.

Less successful was the white sesame, which frustratingly lacked any distinctive nutty flavour; the black sesame version fared far better. We'll be looking out for other promised offerings too - pear saké and bellini, say.

Staff here have been trained by the baristas at the highly regarded Prufrock, so we'll be back to sample the coffees (perhaps in an affogato) once they're more confident at pulling shots on their Victoria Arduino machine.

I could not agree more with the review from EW below. Surprisingly it is a total miss for TimeOut here. If Gelupo gets a 5*, La Gelatiera today definitly deserves the same rating. For my own taste this is even better than Gelupo - the textures have a density that I like -- soft but stiff, without any chewy or stickiness to it. Love their unique unusual flavours too. And where in London can you see the Maestro in action and actually get him to give you some tips :)

Time out has been way too harsh here with 3 stars. I would say this place is as good as Gelupo. The flavours are adventurous and really lovely (never too sweet which is a problem with a lot of the gelato in London) and the texture and creaminess of the gelato here really sets this place apart from its competitors. I just had a scoop of the Orange, Honey and Rosemary this afternoon and was in my little corner of heaven.

Best seasonal ingredients and great slow food ethics makes this place unique in London. Was well worth the visit form Japan :) They also have good coffee.

Bog standard gelati, Chin Chin in Camden and Gelupo in Soho destroy this place

Wonderful, the real taste of the freshest pistacchio and mango.
Also I love the freshly made grandma's cakes served on those extra cute vintage china plates with a scoop of my favourite stracciatella!
Brings up so many lovely memories...

Definitely the best of the recent crop of ice-cream shops that have sprouted up around london. Favourite flavours: pistacchio, ricotta with candied orange and the wicked chilli chocolate. Great affogato, too. WARNING: seriously addictive!!!

The sea salted caramel is to die for - yum! For that alone it gets a five star rating!

Lovely shop and people. Ice-cream tastes delicious, although some flavours are sometimes too hard. I definitely go for the soft ice-cream and classic flavours like chocolate and cream. But try the black sesame, it's great!

I tried some marron glacé ice cream - heavenly, sweet and with gorgeous sticky pieces of chestnut - and also some of the home made amaretti biscuits. I hid the biscuits away, and treated myself a bite at a time. Lovely place, very nice people!
