A helpful history mounted on the wall of this corner site tells us there has been a pub here since 1809; it's unlikely, though, that the original landlord, Isaac Toynbee, would recognise it now.

The bar has been relegated to a small counter at one side, and inside there's not much in the way of original features - instead the plain walls have been painted in Gordon Ramsay greys and oversized drum lightshades hang throughout.

Food is definitely the focus, and it may be hard for the casual drinker to find a seat on a busy evening. Upstairs is fancier still, and more akin to a fine-dining restaurant.

But out the back is a spectacular garden, a contender for the best in the city. There's decking, tables, trees and lighting; high walls shield the grassy expanse from the surrounding streets but allow plenty sunlight in to nourish the verdant borders. A cracking place for an alfresco drink.

Had a brilliant afternoon. Got in out of the rain to find a warm welcome. Twenty Four of us celebrating a birthday. Ages 5 - 75 all catered for magnificently. A couple of drinks followed by one of the best sunday lunches I have had in a long time - beautiful! Staff great, surroundings great. Think I'll go again next week.

Had a brilliant meal at the Guildford. Wonderfully central location in Greenwich. We had a private dining room which had beautiful and plush, comfortable decor. The service was excellent, really friendly and accomodating. We had a load of children with us who were also treated so well and made to feel especially welcome. Childrens' portions were available and the kids all got a tour of the kitchen! The food was wonderful. My fishcakes were well seasoned and creamy in texture and my partner's risotto pleased him too.I had lamb as a main which was cooked well and accompanied by the most amazingly spiced red cabbage. Great flavour combinations. My daughter says her mashed potato was so buttery..."best mash ever!" and she loved the torpedo shape in which it was presented. Custard was freshly made and rhubarb had just the right amount of sharp zing to it. Do go, you'll not be disappointed.

Front of house very good, polite and friendly. Poor food. Seven of us went to celebrate aunt's 91st birthday. Soup had to go back as Luke warm, had to wait over ten mins for more toast to go with pâté. Lamb really tough and whole main course nomt hot enough. coffee Luke warm. Not as if it was full either so no excuse. Wouldn't go back
