Gastropub: British

Mosaic floor tiles at the door and Charrington brewery-etched windows give away this pub's original incarnation: it was built in its present form as the King's Arms in 1898.

The beautiful interior is evidence that no one knew pubs like the Victorians. And it's in safe hands: it was recently bought by the people behind the Princess of Shoreditch, who have undertaken an extensive (and expensive-looking) refurb.

Salvageable elements have been restored to nineteenth-century glory, and sympathetic pastiche applied where necessary. Research has been conducted for the new name: the Lady herself was a member of the Bloomsbury Set, with all the connotations of intellectual elitism and aristocratic shagging that brings.

The ground floor is smart and wood-panelled, but definitely a pub. Up the narrow staircase is undoubtedly a restaurant, lit by candle and filled with heavy tableware and furniture. You can eat downstairs - there's a less formal bar menu - but on our visit it would have been too noisy, filled as it was with unbuttoned suits.

Drinkers can partake of a select range of four ales, including a couple from Purity (Warwickshire) and Sambrook's (Wandsworth). The wine list, though, is the main attraction. There are ten by the glass in both red and white, including interesting and versatile wines such as picpoul de pinet (from Languedoc) and Austria's grüner veltliner. Mark-ups aren't indecent and there's a lot to choose from that are less than £30 a bottle.

The dishes, especially starters, are elaborately constructed. Cured duck breast came as three tiny slices, artfully surrounded by pickled ginger, micro-leaves and goat's cheese mousse.

That old gastropub stalwart, pork belly, came in a perfectly cooked square with a chunk of braised cheek, a strip of crackling and a black pudding croquette. The lobster and crab risotto was unremarkable, however: the flavour of the meat wasn't apparent enough.

As a pub, this Lady already has a pleasantly lived-in feel. As a restaurant it has yet to reach the heights of its more noble Shoreditch sister, but it's worth a peer in all the same.

Went here for a friends birthday and it was great. Had a large table in the pub for Sunday lunch and we were looked after so well. The roast I had was fantastic and the service was friendly and attentive. Can totally recommend.

I liked everything about this restaurant (I got a table in the pub area). The food was excellent and the staff was so warm and helpful. They especially were great to let me try several different wines (and ultimately suggesting a moderately priced Nero d'avola) that complemented my meal perfectly. Great experience and even though I am in London for work for only one more week I am definitely going back before I head home to the states.

Went here for dinner last night and it was great. Staff where friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. We had salmon and partridge to start and lamb rump and sausage casserole for main. Can highly recommend all of them. Will definitely be coming back.

Sadly it's going downhill after a great start. 5 visits to the Lady O since opening, my first 2 visits in nov were fantastic, albeit small portions.

At the 3rd, we left after waiting an hour without food. Staff were v aplogetic.

At the 4th, the food was average.

the 5th yesterday was terrible – pork belly arrived 90% fat, white & wobbly, barely browned on the top – surely it should have been cooked slowly to render down? A replacement dish of venison casserole was more like a venison soup with just 2 drizzled small pieces of meat in it. The decor & service are great, but food that's now worse than brewery gastropub chain? I hope they replace the chef, otherwise I doubt they'll last long.

Beautiful experience, great staff, great food in an elegant setting. Went there New Years Eve, based on recommendation from Time Out and other sites. Travelling from US, they made every effort to get in touch with us when there were questions about the reservation, making sure our NYE plans were kept. All in all a fantastic experience for us.
