Russell Square is an inevitable part of student life in London. Most students can, on cue, moan extensively about the lack of characterful but cheap places to eat in the area - especially ones where you can use free wi-fi to your heart's content.
Bloomsbury Coffee House is a daytime basement café that solves this problem. Owned by a young couple, the café has two rooms, wooden floors and quaintly mismatched furniture and crockery.
The menu is short, but sufficient: three or four lunch options plus a selection of cakes, most made on the premises. On weekends classic breakfasts are served. Our full-bodied tomato soup with chorizo was almost stew-like, and the welsh rarebit was made with proper bread.
Our chocolate brownie was like a cake but somehow even better for it, and the pumpkin pie featured well-made pastry.
The 'coffee house' moniker is no false claim. The beans are from Allpress, and both our espresso and cappuccino were full flavoured and expertly made.
Bloomsbury Coffee House is a cosy place to hang out with your laptop, read a book, and nibble some cake. The prices are hard to beat too, and even better if you flash a student card for a 10 per cent discount.

Had a nice relaxing time at Bloomsbury Cafe. I had a cappuccino , sandwich and iced cake after a morning meeting in the area. All food was carfully prepared and staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The iced cake was yummy .Will definitely be back again soon to try the cooked lunch from special's board. A little gem of a place :)
Wonderful and really friendly service. Wish the opening hours were longer!
Gorgeous cakes and coffee complemented by great background music. Delighted with this place. Shame the opening hours are so short on a Saturday though.
Hidden gem in Russell Square with a small but perfectly formed menu of hearty mains and scrumptious homemade treats.
I had a flavoursome minestrone soup that was packed full of juicy vegetables followed by an iced cinnamon bun that was so fresh it was still warm - all washed down nicely with a couple of teas from their wide range (the chilli chai tea was especially delicious).
A cosy coffee house perfect for escaping the hustle of London - top marks!
Had a white americano and a pistachio cookie which was very nice, free wifi was good idea although didn't use it, will keep this place to myself, staff very plesant
Really friendly coffee shop that has amazing home made food and coffee. I absolutely love the honey buns! Highly recommended, a must visit when in Russell square or close by.
