There's an old industry cliché that the best place to open a restaurant is next to a highly successful one, so perhaps FishWorks decision to go head-to-head with Bentley's on Swallow Street is not as impudent or as reckless as it seems.
The new owners of the once-burgeoning chain have given their flagship site a classier, more understated look than you may remember from the brand's previous incarnation (now it's all North Sea grey and dark wood), though the up-front-and-personal fish retail counters remain, as do the cookery courses. The waistcoated staff are very knowledgeable, but, on our visit, were a little too relaxed, forgetting to bring the wine.
Check the board for daily specials - perhaps ray and king scallops, or a choice of whole roast turbot or monkfish to share. The 'ocean platter' of hot and cold seafood is the best way to sample a range of species: 12 are served, with pots of calorie- and allium-laden sauces. Ours was terrific all round, but the incredibly sweet, mild and fresh-tasting brown crabmeat warrants special mention. For the kids, there's fish fingers and spaghetti with tomato sauce. Finish with crowd-pleasing desserts such as crème brûlée, chocolate pudding or eton mess.
FishWorks offers its own-label wine at £24 a bottle, but the South African chenin blanc is a good choice if you're looking for something cheaper.

Facilities
Babies and children welcome ( children's menu; high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Booking advisable, Available for hire, Disabled ( toilet )We went for this deal on Saturday night due to the 50% off food offer. Was not impressed at all. The fish soup was all blended (most seafood restaurants would let fish do the talking and keep the big chunks of seafood as it is), prawn cocktail was...average and the bread forgotten. Mains were better but if I was going to pay £18 for monkfish I'd expect a lot more. Only 3 stars for the price...
