Cosmetics à la Carte, in the same hands for 30 years, has enjoyed a steady following from local Sloane families throughout its lifetime; grandmothers bring their teenage granddaughters here for their first make-up lesson, thirtysomethings drop in for a seasonal make-up bag refresher, while brides-to-be visit in preparation for the big day. The small, stylish shop offers ‘made-to-measure’ make-up (it was the first company to do so) and skincare. Gone are the days of buying an eyeshadow trio because you like two of the shades. The click-in Colourbox system here allows you to fill up a palette with whichever shade you fancy (eye, lip and cheek colours cost between £12 and £25). And the Rose Dew Hydrating Primer does an excellent job at smoothing out fine lines. Having trouble finding your perfect foundation? If one of the ready-made shades doesn’t match your complexion perfectly, you can have one specially mixed for £45. Make-up artists are on hand to give advice, even if you don’t opt for one of the renowned lessons (£50-£180). Recent additions to the collection include the Skin Veil primer, Cover Tint mineral make-up, ‘flush blush’ and a new range of colours for the excellent ‘outliner’ eyeliner pots.
