Cannot say enough good things about Stunt Dolly, Dean is a wonderful hairdresser, I always leave there smiling. Great cuts, great colour work, I won't let anyone else near my mop!

Considering its vast community of style-focused residents, Dalston is poorly served for salons along Kingsland Road – with only Blue Tit and Bleach to its name. Now Stunt Dolly deserves some of that fashionable footfall, but it’s also got a refreshingly welcoming feel. ‘A lady came in for a wash and a trim the other day,’ says head stylist Dean Tooley as he gives my hair a powerful lathering and my ears a thorough gossiping.
‘It was only when I started scrubbing that I realised she was wearing a wig. She had total alopecia, but I thought: Why shouldn’t she sit down and enjoy an hour in the salon? I gave her hair a lovely trim, a fab blow dry and sent her out the door smiling.’
Stunt Dolly may be in hipster central, but it caters for everyone, not just the dip-dye types that hit the strip (although they do a mean ombre too). Unusually for a style salon – if not for the area – it also does dreadlocks, wefts and wigs. If you buy a hairpiece from nearby Pak Cosmetics, they’ll position it for you for a tenner. Washing and wig services take place on the good-looking ground floor, which is all original floorboards and reclaimed art deco fittings from Retrouvius.
Downstairs, where the dries and nails are carried out in a pair of darkly painted rooms, has more of a disco feel. Complementing the reasonably priced, full menu of hair services, which come with a retro roller dry rather than a blow dry (for soft waves) is an exciting weekend-only nail art service from Sophie Harris Greenslade, whose hugely popular Illustrated Nail blog has earned her cult status in London.

This isn't a hair cut - it's hair therapy! Dean is completely amazing, he gave me the best haircut I have ever had, was totally honest and I completely trusted his judgment. Not only do you get an amazing haircut at Stunt Dolly, but the whole atmosphere is wonderful - it's like walking into your best friend's living room! Love it there - I'll never go elsewhere for a haircut!
I visited Stunt Dolly for the first time after recently moving into the area, the salon’s repertoire of great reviews on Timeout and The Dalstonist persuaded me to try them out and I was particularly excited by the promise of popcorn! The atmosphere in the salon is warm and comforting, much more welcoming than the clinical harshness typical of most! The interior design could easily be that of a café/bar, and I was pleasantly surprised to be offered a drinks list when I arrived! A lovely touch, the drinks selection makes you feel relaxed, whether you are there for a quick trim or a completely new look. Dean quickly got to work and within 20 minutes my straggly locks had been replaced! He understood I wanted a low maintenance cut that would last a while, he was also very happy to share his wisdom and I made the most of my visit to pick his brains about colour and updo’s. Once he’d finished my trim, Dean insisted on whipping my hair up into a style we’d discussed so I could try it with my dress when I got home! Stunt Dolly far outdid other salons I have frequented in the past and I’m looking forward to becoming a regular!
I used to hate getting my hair cut because I never felt the hairdressers I went to listened to what I actually wanted. The first time I went to Stunt Dolly nearly a year ago, Katy listened to me and took on board the fact that I am totally rubbish at doing my own hair. I walked out with a great cut that I was really happy with and it stayed looking good until my next cut. Dalston has been crying out for a great salon like Stunt Dolly. I love having these guys on my doorstep - they're so friendly and welcoming. AND they feed you free popcorn, beer, wine and whisky. What more can you ask?
Absolutely love this place! For starters the place looks uber cool - the place to be seen on the Dalston drag! But they don't take their coolness seriously. As soon as I'm through the door I'm met with a neighbourhood-friendly, laid-back attitude and if I'm lucky an incredibly cute little dog! It's worth stopping by just to see the art installations in the window! I'm then offered popcorn and beer/ wine and sit reading magazines i can never justify buying for myself. As for the haircut, I always see Hannah who exudes relaxed sandi cool and cuts my hair with meticulous precision. I love it every time! Finally, the whole beautiful little package is wrapped up by the fact I'm charged the price of a guys cut rather than a girls. Important because I've been getting dyke-do's for over 10 years and always get charged the extra for a girls despite it's just like a guys...all the do's are equal in the eyes of Stunt Dolly!
After many years of dreading every hair appointment due to the fear of getting the 'Rachel' cut and being served crap tea I decided to venture to Stunt Dolly in Dalston after hearing great things about the quality of service and staff. I was very impressed from the get-go - lovely, relaxed atmosphere, great coffee (and wine!), great head massage and the friendliest, most attentive staff ever. I had my haircut and also had an ombre style colour job which looks incredible! Its safe to say Stunt Dolly have cured my fear of hair appointments and I'll definitely be making it my regular. I'd definitely recommend Stunt Dolly to anyone that wants not only a great hair do but a lovely afternoon with great people also.
I agree with all the reviews here. Stunt Dolly is a brilliant salon. I can’t believe that the wine, beer, hot drinks and home-made popcorn haven’t been mentioned yet. On a serious note, I first had my hair done by Dean when he worked at a different salon. After years of searching for a good hairdresser in London, Dean was the best I’d come across. I always used to leave salons not completely happy with what I had done or with a huge urgency to go home to wash and restyle my hair myself. With Dean doing my hair, I ramble to him about what I want and somehow he manages to completely understand it and make it happen. He challenges what I think and knows what will suit me. Even when I don’t completely agree with him at the start, I leave the salon feeling really glad I listened to him. I am so happy he opened his own place. On top of having great skills as a hairdresser, I know he has very high standards for the people he works with. Everybody at Stunt Dolly is professional, friendly and very good at their jobs. David is front of house and I think he deserves a huge accolade too. A lot of salons, especially if they look very cool and trendy can feel a little intimidating. David is warm, friendly and will always have a chat to make you feel welcome and relaxed. There’s a real family feel to the salon and it’s just a pleasure to go and hang out there. The huge bonus is that you leave with great looking hair. I can’t recommend Stunt Dolly enough. Go now!
After a lot of bad experiences with previous hairdressers I had given up trying to find one. When my friend recommended a stylist called Katy at Stunt Dolly in Dalston I thought I'd pluck up the courage to go and try it out. The warm welcome from my stylist put me at ease. Katy was really friendly and sweet and listened to exactly what I wanted. That's what I found most annoying in previous hairdressers I had seen, they just didn't listen to what I really wanted. Katy completely understood me and I had the best haircut I have ever had. I really can't recommend her enough. The salon is really lovely inside too which is an added bonus.
Stunt Dolly really is a great salon. Style-wise, it definitely fits into the achingly fashionable Dalston scene, but two key things set it apart. Firstly, it's the friendliest salon I've ever visited - co-owner David sets the tone with his warm, effusive welcome, the team are all smiles, and having a cute house puppy just adds to the homely, welcoming atmosphere. And secondly, owner Dean is simply the best colourist and cutter I've ever had - I cannot recommend him highly enough. He's a consummate professional with amazing technical skills, but what's great is the way he translates the client's wishes, gives advice and then delivers a flattering, personal style. My hair has never looked better, and Stunt Dolly have a loyal customer for life!
I have lived in London for 8 years now and have searched high & low for the perfect hairdresser. This makes me sound ultra fussy or like someone with tricky hair but that's not the case. I am just the opposite. I don't 'do' my hair. I wash & go! 3 years ago I met Dean and have been a loyal client since. He LISTENS and DELIVERS, every time! He cuts so well that I can go months and months before it needs another cut. When it comes to colouring we discuss what we both think but ultimately I leave it up to Dean to decide and I'm always happy with the result. Love me some Stunt Dolly!!!
Its taken me 10 plus years to find a hairdresser like Stunt Dolly…..they are fantastic and I cant recommend them highly enough. I left feeling great and keep smiling when I look at the amazing colour & highlights Dean has done. I was given great advise along with a consultation and knew straight away I was in totally professional hands. Totally brilliant….so please form an orderly queue.
Love love love this place! They now have an adorable puppy too, which makes retreats there even more blissful! Dean is amazing, I'm constantly recommending him to my friends. To me, this is the perfect hair salon!
Dean is a fantastic hairdresser and colourist, striking a perfect balance between what the client wants and his own creative input. Having visited other hairdressers in the area, including Blue Tit, Stunt Dolly is the first salon where I have left feeling totally happy. Bravo!
