This tongue-in-cheek Oz prequel, which may appeal to adults more than kids, explains how the Wicked Witch of the West (Alexa Khadime) wasn't really wicked at all, more a defender of those the Wizard sought to repress. The sly references to 'The Wizard of Oz' are hugely enjoyable. But the ending of Joe Mantello's production is a terrible cop out and, like the Wizard himself, there's something rather conventional lurking behind the spectacle.
