The Lyttelton provides the National Theatre with a classic-looking theatre space – though, thankfully, it comes without the obstructive pillars of older venues. Timeless plays such as Lee Hall’s stellar ‘The Pitmen Painters’ and Harold Pinter rarity ‘The Hothouse’ have gone down a storm here. Summer 2009 also saw the stage return of Helen Mirren playing opposite Dominic Cooper (of ‘Mamma Mia!’ fame) in ‘Phédre’.
