You may have spotted some colourful (and, incidentally, comfortable) benches have been scattered across the city over the last few weeks, bringing some novel artwork to our pavements; each design is inspired by a classic novel or much-loved author. They have now been packed up for retouching before they are auctioned off at the Southbank Centre on October 7, with all funds raised going to the National Literacy Trust. Visit the Books About Town website to browse all 50 benches and bid online. If for some reason you just can't think of where you'd put a 145cm wide fibreglass seat, you can buy a ticket for the auction and find out who does have space for them, or simply go to see the whole lot on display in Gordon Square between 10am and 6pm, Oct 4-5.
