For most of us, delicious hot drinks and mince pies come as standard in the run-up to Christmas – but for the Outdoor Swimming Society these treats have to be earned. The December Dip, back for its seventh year, will see 400 participants plunge into the freezing cold water at Parliament Hill’s outdoor lido. Taking a Thermos of something warming for afterwards is recommended – and chilly souls might want to consider booties and gloves for the swim.
At its coldest, the pool has been known to form mini icebergs, so only the bravest winter swimmers should apply to take part in Arctic Adventures (which means undertaking a full two lengths of the lido rather than the standard two widths). Participants are also encouraged to dress up for a chance to be crowned Best Dressed Dipper.
The North London Brass Band will provide an encouraging soundtrack and – best of all – poet Richard Scott will be in residence on the day, writing couplets and haikus about the swimmers and their dip. Brilliant! We’ve had a little go, too:
You’re no longer cold,
Mince pie crumbs on your red cheeks,
A victory smile.
