2013: Moments in Time
Fri Dec 20, 9-10pm, BBC2
Fri Dec 13 2013
It’s probably understandable, given that the death of Nelson Mandela has added another layer to the year’s news agenda. But no preview material was available of this documentary, which functions as a review of the year via the medium of photography. Might Obama’s selfie at the memorial feature? It’s becoming a tired truism to claim that smartphones and social media have made photojournalists of us all.
But even so, from the Boston Marathon bombing to the London helicopter crash, many of the year’s most arresting images have been captured by amateurs. However, this film will also deal with the horrifying moments – from the Westgate Mall in Nairobi to the devastation in the Philippines – where there’s no substitute for professionalism and experience. Should be fascinating.
