Series one, episode three
Any concerns that this might settle down into an inventive-sicko-of-the-week procedural can be laid to one side; tonight is all about the fallout from the Minnesota Shrike killings as Abigail awakes from her coma to find the FBI on her case.

The attentions of flame-haired newshound Freddie (‘I’m a journalist – I just want to tell the truth’ – not for nothing has Bryan Fuller cited Rebekah Brooks as an inspiration) prove a mixed blessing, while Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen, who we hesitate to call the definitive Lecter just yet, but…) seems more interested in creating serial killers than stopping them.

It all makes for another enjoyably lurid and often disorientating hour of drama, although one has to wonder whether the intuitive genius of Will Graham and Jack Crawford is somehow being counterbalanced by the workaday incompetence of a police force who can’t guard a witness properly.
