The Day Kennedy Died

Thu Nov 14, 10.35-11.50pm, ITV

Flatly narrated by Kevin Spacey, this documentary retells the events of November 22 1963 through eyewitnesses, newsreels and still photos, without a political commentator or conspiracy theorist in sight. The result is oddly moving: stripped of the handwringing and hagiography, it’s possible to reconnect with the shock and anger felt by ordinary people and police at the assassination.

Kennedy himself is barely analysed: irrespective of what sort of saint or shit you thought he was, that day was about the killing of a president, and the confusion and hurt that the people who saw it still feel gives that rather abstract idea a new immediacy and awfulness.
