The Great British Bake Off: the Final

It’s no spoiler to reveal that this year’s winner will be a woman, but beyond that, it’s a tough one to call. Misery-guts improviser Ruby? Unflappable charmer Kimberley? Or head girl-ish inventor Frances? The backstories that accompany tonight’s final confirm that they’re all lovely people really, and it’ll be a hard soul indeed that doesn’t feel for the baker who chokes during the showstopper, or overbakes their pretzels.

As well as the New York deli classic, savoury picnic pies and wedding cakes are also on the menu, and you although you might have identified a clear winner by now, it’s a dangerous game to second-guess Hollywood or Berry. Either way, be sure to savour this one, because more than one show has, in jumping from BBC2 to BBC1, jumped the shark in the process.
