Union Station might get a gastropub and we're all aboard

Here's some exciting news about one of our favorite LA buildings. Union Station might get a gastropub in the Fred Harvey room, which is just across the south garden from the main entrance hall. It's an Art Deco beauty. Swoon.

Early next month, Metro's board of directors will consider a lease application for the Fred Harvey room from none other than Cedd Moses and Eric Needleman (the guys behind Cole's, Honeycut, Seven GrandThe Varnish and Broadway Bar). This totally makes sense—these guys know and love historic DTLA buildings and we'd trust them to do Union Station justice.

The staff report from Metro says the intention is to "maintain the historic ambience of the restaurant and bring it into the current day as an American brew pub with a hometown menu." Sounds legit. At its October 2 meeting, the board could give Metro staff the green light to work out the rest of the lease for the space.

We're totally on board with Union Station as a destination. In fact, it already is. Last year, The Industry's opera "Invisible Cities" was a huge hit and most of the performances sold out. It's the highlight of every trip on the Gold Line. And we always take our tourist friends in for a peak. It's a good distance away from Olvera Street when we need to walk off a huge plate of enchiladas.

If you want to take a nice long look at Fred Harvey room, watch Fiona Apple's gorgeous video for "Paper Bag." Kudos to The Source for reminding us of one of our favorite music videos. Now just sip a craft beer and you'll start to see the vision for the room.
