Time Out says

Employing 5,000 people, and equipped with an annual budget of $1.4 billion, the JPL designed, built and now operates NASA's Deep Space Network; it was also responsible for the Mars Pathfinder and the Spirit rover's mission to Mars.

Roughly once a week, the lab opens its doors to the public; the 2- to 2.5-hour tour begins with a multimedia overview of the set-up, after which the public are shown around the Space Flight Operations Facility and the Spacecraft Assembly Facility.

Demand is high and booking well ahead is essential; security concerns dictate that US citizens need to bring a passport or driver's licence, while citizens of other countries must declare their nationality prior to booking and bring a passport and/or green card on the day. For full security and booking details, check the website.

What’s on

Explore JPL

Space enthusiasts, conspiracy theorists and kids-at-heart rejoice: There are orbit-bound robots hidden away in the San Gabriel Mountains foothills and you can visit them. Once a year—and now back after a multi-year-hiatus—NASA and Caltech open the doors to its robotic research lab for two days of tours, demos and presentations. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) oversees the research, fabrication and piloting of unmanned missions like Voyager and the Mars rovers. Due to the event’s incredible popularity, JPL has switched to a timed ticketing system in recent years—and it’s gone a long way in reducing the traffic congestion getting in and the dizzying lines once inside. Admission is still free, but all guests will be required to have a ticket to enter. For this year’s event, held October 10 and 11, free tickets (limit five per person) will be distributed on August 29 at 9am. Highlights of the open house is a bird’s-eye view of the clean room where the probes come together, a tour of mission control, a walk through of the machine shop and an open-air display of rover prototypes.
